Understanding Plaque and Tartar

Last updated 12 months ago

If you are suffering from plaque and tartar buildup, your cosmetic dentist may recommend cavity or gum disease treatment. Plaque results from a lack of proper brushing, and tartar develops when plaque hardens on the teeth. For more information about plaque and tartar, look below.

What Is Plaque?

Plaque is a white, sticky film that is constantly created in the mouth. It develops from sugary and starchy foods and beverages. Each time you eat or drink, acids from the meal interact with the acids and bacteria that live in your mouth and combine to form plaque. Often, you can feel plaque on your teeth about one hour after you eat. However, even when you can’t feel plaque, it is still there. Plaque continually forms on the teeth and at the base of the gums.

What Is Tartar?

Tartar is plaque that has hardened to your teeth. If you fail to remove all the plaque that develops throughout the day, it becomes hard and stuck to the teeth. Once tartar develops, your teeth become more prone to staining, increased plaque buildup, cavities, and gum disease. If you develop tartar, only your dentist can remove it using professional-grade dental cleaning instruments, so be sure to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums each day.

How Can You Prevent Cavities and Gum Disease?

To keep your teeth and gums healthy, you’ll need to brush your teeth at least twice a day. For the best protection, consider using tartar control or fluoride toothpaste. After you brush, you’ll need to floss your teeth. Generally, flossing once a day is all you need to clean plaque buildup from the gums. Also, schedule a professional dental cleaning and exam at least twice a year.

Now is the perfect time for you to schedule a dental exam and cleaning.
